Akhuwat Khawaja Support Program organizes a “Trans Visibility Carnival”

Akhuwat Khwajasira Support Program-AKSP organizes a carnival for the community members at the NJV School for their monthly event. The Purpose of the “Trans Inclusive Event” is to recognize the Transgender community and all the hardships and hurdles of life they go through, and to celebrate their existence with love and respect. While we cannot underestimate the violence and discrimination that transgender face, this was a day to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments and resiliency of a community that is oftentimes ignored and devalued. The members from the Khawajasira community were warmly welcomed by the team AKSP. Mr. Nazir Ahmed Tunio, Director Akhuwat Sindh, honored the event with his gracious presence. The Carnival took off with reciting of The Holy Quran by a student of NJV. 2 minutes of silence was observed for the murder of Shabana, a Khawajasira who was murdered on April 14, 2019. Two of the Khawajasira members participated by reciting naat and patriotic song respectively. A special musical performance by a choir was performed in tribute to the hardships of the Khawajasira community. Abuse and exploitation of the transgender persons is still common in the society. Many of them continue to be thrown out of their own houses by their families, denied jobs and forced into inappropriate jobs like begging or dancing at weddings to make ends meet. Through these monthly events, AKSP aims to bring attention to the accomplishments of Trans people everywhere while fighting the transphobia by spreading understanding of Tran’s people. Akhuwat Foundation pioneers and leads in interest-free (Qarz-e-Hasan) micro-finance in the world. Akhuwat also has a long-term vision for the future of education throughout Pakistan. Akhuwat’s mission to restore dignity amongst the underprivileged recognized the plight of the Khwajasiras and decided to initiate its Khwajasira Support Program. In May 2018, Akhuwat Khwaja Sira Support Program was initiated throughout Pakistan- making it the first ever nationwide welfare program for Khwajasiras in the country.

“Aiming to provide for protection, relief and rehabilitation of rights of the transgender persons and ensure their welfare.”
